Within the research consortium ALPHEUS" Augmenting grid stability through Low-head Pumped Hydro Energy Utilization & Storage" funded by the EU within the framework of Horizon 2020, the efficiency of pumps and turbines of low-head pumped storage facilities is addressed. This is motivated by more and more intermittent renewable energy sources put to market and their effect on grid stability, while maintaining flexibility. In this context, the Chair HPC-Waves is planning to help in the consortium to identify and assess potential sites in the North Sea and Atlantic for the construction of low-head pumped hydro storage facilities. In the first phase, this includes computation of a long-term wave hindcast at high resolution and the development of a GIS system representing various aspects ranging from wave conditions to socio-economic aspects and stakeholder involvement. The second phase focuses on the assessment of structural impact of breaking and non-breaking waves on the site of low-head pump storage facilities to identify potential failure mechanisms. This work involves coupling of different numerical models such as phase-averaged with phase-resolving and/or depth-integrated solutions with full 3D solutions. The PhD position is hosted by the UPPA chaire HPC-Waves (Anglet campus) and is funded by the EU Horizon 2020 project. The position would be primarily based in Anglet, France. The candidate is expected to be able and willing to occasionally participate in domestic or international travel. The candidate is expected to be self-organized with a background in numerical modeling of nearshore waves. Si quieres saber más sobre la oferta envíame un email y te puedo dar más información.
